An eco-conscious couple seeking to return to city living commissioned our firm to convert an existing two-family home, ca. 1884, in Providence to an energy efficient single family with space for their two older children and home offices, and an open layout for the common areas. To achieve their goals, we removed a rear stair no longer needed with the conversion, and relocated the front stair to the center of the home, allowing us to make full use of the front and rear of the home for living space.
Recessing a beam into the first floor ceiling gave us the structure needed to open the entire first floor for common area, with a double door opening to large back deck and patio. The kitchen was moved to the rear and we included an adjacent mudroom as well. To reach their energy goals, we designed the home for solar panels and smart home functions. A VRF HVAC system with energy recovery ventilation was selected to allow for multizone heating and cooling, while adding fresh air throughout the home.
