Daycare Expansion Project | Allston, MA
Client:
Daycare center operator in Massachusetts. Problem:
Renovating 3 existing daycare buildings. Accommodating the maximum number of children in the space while maintaining or exceeding building code requirements. Other important considerations included accommodating the required number of adults, and providing the necessary number of bathrooms and exits. |
Solution:
2000 SF . 2014-2016 A multi-phase project: 1) In the Building 1, we renovated an existing basement into a large, open, bright, free play area. We also created two additional classrooms on the second floor. 2) Designed an attractive, wide, steel staircase at the back of Building 1 in order to provide the second exit required by building code. 4) In Building 2: we added 4 classrooms including a dedicated space for science exploration. Additional exits were also provided. 5) In Building 3: we renovated unused space on the upper floor of a former mill building built into a hill. The new design integrates the two sides of the floor around a central stair, and provided classrooms and bathrooms. Careful calculations made it possible to provide three distinct exits from this floor for students and staff safety. |
