Family-oriented empty-nesters sought to create a new gathering space for their adult children to join them for movie night and decided to include a couple dream amenities. One dreamed of a rooftop greenhouse filled with plants and the other had their sights on an observatory tower to house their telescope and offer a new vantage point to the stars. The solution was a 2-story addition that would sit atop the existing garage. The garage would need to be structurally reinforced to bear the weight of the new addition. The new family room would be open and modern, filled with natural light. We designed a wall of windows that became the new dominating feature of the home. A stair leads to the 3rd story featuring multiple sitting areas, along with access to the observatory tower and the greenhouse and rooftop patio. The observatory tower was designed to fit the dome, which opens and rotates 360 degrees. The greenhouse includes heating, cooling fans and a sink table for potting and caring for the many plants the space can hold.
