The historic Market House on the Rhode Island School of Design's campus in Providence, RI houses a variety of classrooms, studios and offices. Built in 1775 and deeded to RISD in 1948, the interior had been remodeled to suit the school's needs decades ago. One space being used as a computer lab was in dire need of improvement. Electric and data had been added in conduit to the walls over the decades. Large electrical panels for various parts of the building were mounted on the walls, and the existing HVAC system filled a large section of the wall and ceiling. We were tasked with designing the renovation which included removing the HVAC system from the interior of the room, adding a new improved ceiling, renovating the floor, removing one of two doorways, relocating the bulky electrical panels, renovating the walls and painting. The final product is a clean, functional classroom that will be adaptable and safe with more usable space.
